I remember Gilliam saying that he was the first director to credit source material as “inspired by” and had fights with the studio over it. I like the idea a lot, and lets the idea of a remake become more of it’s own beast.
He also said that ‘Brazil’ was inspired by 1984. He hadn’t read the book, so only hearing the premise gave him ideas for doing his own version of it.
