Eight Questions to the 14th Dalai Lama

June 8th, 2007 by Klintron

Over the last 25 years thousands of people worldwide have been initiated into the highest levels of Buddhism by the 14th Dalai Lama. Fundamental to this initiation is a holy text (tantra), namely the Kalachakra-Tantra, part of which is the Shambhala Myth.

Kalachakra is Sanskrit and means “wheel of time”. In recent times the Kalachakra-Tantra has been increasingly critically scrutinised. In our western debate-oriented society it stands to reason that the Dalai Lama himself answers some of these critical questions in order to ensure that any misinterpretations are corrected.

This is old hat, and the authors make it sound like destroying the forces of materialism is a bad thing….where do I sign up?

Haven’t read the work in question but this does sound like a very literal reading. Most holy texts I’ve ever read conform to Crowley’s glib diagnosis “rantings of a deranged mind.” when taken verbatim. Surely a high initiate of the eightfold path would have at least the beginnings of a context for the tantra and be likely to avoid a superficial reading?

Yogaboy - who decides what is the “correct” reading of an ancient text? Also, who gets to choose who qualifies as a “high initiate of the eightfold path”?
