Ads on Technoccult, and in RSS feeds

December 9th, 2004 by Klintron

As you may have noticed, I’ve been running Google ads for the past couple months, and have added some Amazon affliate links recently as well. I’m still undecided as to whether these ads are worth the money they make. Traffic has only increased since I started running the ads. Probably because I’ve been better about posting. But I wanted to give you, dear reader, the chance to let me know what you think about this advertising business.

1. Do you mind the ads on Technoccult?

2. Do you read Technoccult on the web or entirely in your feedreader?

3. Do you prefer to read whole feeds in your feedreader, or do you prefer only excerpts?

4. Would you prefer an ad-free exceprt feed to a ad supported full feed?

5. Would you pay a small fee (say, $1 - 5 a year) for an ad-free full feed?

6. If you use a feedreader, which one do you use? (The Cabal counts).

hello, I enjoy your site and don’t mind the ads because they are small and unobtrusive. I visit this place via the web and don’t use a feedreader.

paying for stuff sucks, and brings that icky ingroup vs. outgroup feeling to a site.

I don’t remember how I located your site, but it wasn’t via ads.

    :)

    Thanks for the feedback!

I forgot to mention, but you can look at Boing Boing’s new RSS feed for an example of what I’d do… they’ve got a small little text ad at the bottom of every other entry.

Re: unwillingness to pay, I completely understand. I don’t like paying for stuff either ;) But, Lisa, I’d never make Technoccult subscription only, I but if I stick with the ads and enough people express an interst I might create an ad-free version of the site.

BTW, John I’d probably create a seperate ad-free feed for the Cabal and other aggregators.

    4) No
    5) No
    6) N/A

Hope that helps. I didn’t even notice the ads until you pointed them out, actually. But then, I’ve gotten good at blocking that kind of thing out.

    1. Nope, Google Ads are fairly unobtrusive
    2. Normally entirely in my newsreader
    3. Whole feeds mean I’m more likely to read an article, but not much more.
    4. I’d probably prefer an ad-free excerpt feed.
    5. If it were convenient / possible for me to do so, I would

“BTW, John I’d probably create a seperate ad-free feed for the Cabal and other aggregators.”

As far as The Cabal goes, it draws from the summary field if that’s available, not the full entry. So if you didn’t put ads in the summary, then they will have no Cabally impact.
